Mr Lamb : So you will. But the world won’t. The world’s got a whole face, and the world’s there to be looked at.

हां तुम्हारा तोह आधा चेहरा ही होगा ! किन्तु दुनिया का तोह नहीं होगा ! दुनिया के पास पूरा चेहरा है और पूरी दुनिया की सब चीजे ही देखने क लिए ही होती है !

Derry : It won’t make my face change. Do you know, one day, a woman went by me in the street and she was with another woman. She looked at me, and she said, ‘look at that. That’s a face only a mother could love.

इससे मेरा चेहरा नहीं बदल जायेगा ! क्या आप जानते हैं ? एक दिन एक औरत गली में मेरे पास से गुजरी और वह एक अन्य औरत के साथ थी  ! उसने मेरी तरफ देखा और उसने कहा - उसकी तरफ देखो ! वह एक ऐसा चेहरा है जिससे सिर्फ एक माँ ही प्यार कर सकती है

Mr Lamb : So you believe everything you hear ?

तो तुम जो कुछ भी सुनते हैं उस पर विश्वास कर लेते हो ?

Derry : I’ve heard a lot of things.

मैंने बहुत सी बाते सुनी है।

Mr Lamb : So now keep your ears Shut.

तो आजकल तुम अपने कान बंद रखते हो।

Derry : You say peculiar things. I don’t understand.

आप तो विचित्र बातें करते है। मैं बिलकुल भी समझ नहीं पता

Mr Lamb : I’ve a hive of bees behind those trees over there. Some hears bees and they say, bees buzz. But when you listen to bees for a long while, they hum……and hum means ‘sign’ . I hear them singing.

उस तरफ उन पेड़ो के पीछे मेरे पास मधुमक्खियों का छत्ता है।  कुछ लोग  मधुमक्खियों सुनते है और कहते है , मधुमक्खियों भिन्नभिनाती है।  किन्तु जब तुम मधुमक्खियों की आवाज को काफी देर तक  ध्यान से सुनो तो वे तुम को गुनगुनाती लगेंगी .........और गुनगुनाने का अर्थ है ' गाना गाना ' ! मै उन्हें गाते हुए सुनता हूँ। 

Derry : You still say peculiar things.

आप अभी भी अजीबोगरीब बातें कहते हैं।

Mr Lamb : Peculiar some

हां , वे कुछ लोगों को अनोखी लग सकती है !

Derry : What do you do all day ?

आप सारे दिन क्या करते हो ?

Mr Lamb :  Sit in the sun. Read books. Ah, you thought it was an empty house, but inside, it’s full. Books and other things.

धुप में बैठा रहता हूँ ! और किताबे पढता रहता हूँ ! आह , तुम समझे थे की यह खाली मकान था , किन्तु भीतर यह पूरी तरह भरा हुवा है ! किताबो और दूसरी चीजों से !

Derry : But there aren’t any curtains at the windows.

किन्तु खिड़कियों पर कोई परदे नहीं है !

Mr Lamb : I’m not fond of curtains. Shutting things out,  Shutting things in. I like the light and the darkness, and the windows open, to hear the wind

मुझे पर्दो का कोई शौक नहीं है ! चीजों को बाहर बंद करना , चीजों को अंदर बंद करना ( मुझे पसंद नहीं है ! ) मुझे रौशनी  और अँधेरा पसंद है ; और पवन के चलने की आवाज को सुनने के लिए खिड़कियों को रखना भी !

 

Derry : Yes I liked that. When it’s raining, I like to hear it on the roof.

हां  मुझे ( आपका ऐसा कहना ) अच्छा लगा है ! जब वर्षा हो रही हो तब छत के ऊपर वर्षा की आवाजों को मुझे अच्छा लगता है !

Mr Lamb : So you’re not lost altogether ? You do hear things. You listen.

तोह तुम पूरी तरह से चीजों से बेखबर नहीं हुए हो ? तुमको चीजे सुनाई देती है ! तुम ध्यान से सुनते भी हो !

Derry : They talk about me. Downstairs. When I’m not there. “What’ll he ever do ? What’s going to happen to him when we’ve gone ? How ever will he get on in this world ? Looking like that ? With that on his face ?” That’s what  they say.

वे मेरे विषय बातें करते है ! निचली मंजिल पर !जब  मै वहा नहीं होता ! '' वह कभी भी क्या कर पाएगा ? उसके साथ क्या होने वाला है, जब हम जा चुके होंगे (मर गए होंगे ) ? इस दुनिया में वह अपना गुजरा किस तरह कर पायेगा ? ऐसा दिखते  हुए  ? अपने चेहरे पर उस (कुरूपता ) के साथ ? '' वे सब  यही कहते  है !

Mr Lamb : Boy, you’ve got arms, two legs and eyes and ears you’ve got a tongue and a brain. You’ll get on the way you want, like all the rest. And if you choose, and set your mind to it , you could get on better than all the rest.

लड़के , तुम्हारे पास दो बाहें ,दो टंगे , आंखे ,कान ,एक जीभ और एक दिमाग है ! सभी अन्य लोगो की तरह , तुम भी उस रस्ते पर चल सकोगे जिस रास्ते पर भी तुम चलना चाहो ! और यदि तुम सही चुनाव कर लो  और दृण निश्चय के साथ उसमे लग जाओ तो तुम अन्य लोगो की अपेक्षा कही ज्यादा अच्छी तरह गुजारा कर सकते हो !

Mr Lamb : Same way As I do.

Derry : Do you have any Friends ?

Mr Lamb : Hundreds.

सैकड़ों।

Derry : But I’m not a Friend.

लेकिन मैं मित्र नहीं हूं

Mr Lamb : Certainly you are. So far as I’m concerned. What have you done to make me think you’re not ?

Derry : You don’t know me. You don’t know where I come from or even what my name is.

Mr Lamb : Why not ?

Derry : How could I ? You pass people in the street and you might even speak to them, but it doesn’t mean they’re friends.

Mr Lamb : The gate’s always open.

Derry : But this isn’t mine.

Mr Lamb : Everything’s yours if you want it. What’s mine is anybody’s.

Derry : So I could come here again ?

Mr Lamb : Certainly. You might find others here, but that needn’t stop you.

Mr Lamb : Waiting. Watching. Listening. Sitting here or going there. I’ll have to see to the bees

इंतज़ार कर रही। देख रहे। सुनना। इधर बैठना या उधर जाना। मुझे मधुमक्खियों को देखना होगा

Derry : I think you’re crazy.

मुझे लगता है कि तुम पागल हो।

Mr Lamb : Good excuse not to come back.[Mr lamb goes to his bees.]

वापस न आने का अच्छा बहाना।[ Mr.Lamb अपनी मधुमक्खियों के पास जाता है।]

Derry : (Shouts) I’m going. But I’ll come back. You see. You wait. I can run. I haven’t got a tin leg I’ll be back.

[Derry runs off]

(चिल्लाते हुए) मैं जा रहा हूँ। लेकिन मैं वापस आऊंगा। आप समझ सकते हैं। इंतज़ार करो। मैं दौड़ सकता हूं। मेरे पास टिन लेग नहीं है मैं वापस आऊंगा।

Mr Lamb : [ To himself ] I know my dear. I’ll aome back.’ They all say but never do come back.

Scene : Derry’s House. दृश्य: डेरी हाउस।

Mother : You think I don’t know about him.

Derry : You shouldn’t believe all you hear.

आप जो कुछ भी सुनते हैं उस पर आपको विश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए।

Mother : Be warned. You’re not to go back there.

आगाह रहो। आपको वहां वापस नहीं जाना है।

Derry : What are you afraid of ? What do you think he is ? An old man with a tin leg and he lives in a huge house without curtains and has a garden. And I want to be there, and sit and …………listen to things. Listen and Look.

आप किस बात से भयभीत हैं ? आपको क्या लगता है वह क्या है? टिन के पैर वाला एक बूढ़ा आदमी और वह बिना पर्दे के एक विशाल घर में रहता है और उसके पास एक बगीचा है। और मैं वहां रहना चाहता हूं, और बैठना चाहता हूं और ……… चीजों को सुनना चाहता हूं। सुनो और देखो।

Mother : Listen to what ?

सुनो क्या ?

Derry : Bees singing. Him talking.

मधुमक्खियां गा रही हैं। वह बात कर रहा है।

Mother : And what’s he got to say you ?

और उसे आपसे क्या कहना है?

Derry : Things that matter. Things nobody else has ever said. Things I want to think about.

चीजें जो मायने रखती हैं। बातें किसी और ने कभी नहीं कही। जिन चीजों के बारे में मैं सोचना चाहता हूं।

Mother : Then you stay here do your thinking. You’re best off here.

फिर तुम यहीं ठहरो, अपनी सोच समझो। आप यहाँ सबसे अच्छे हैं।

Derry : I hate it here.

मुझे यहाँ पसंद नहीं है।

Mother : you’ll Stop here.

तुम यहीं रुक जाओ।

Derry :Oh no, oh no. Because if don’t go back there, I’ll never go anywhere in this world again.

अरे नहीं, अरे नहीं। क्योंकि अगर वहाँ वापस नहीं गया, तो मैं फिर कभी इस दुनिया में कहीं नहीं जाऊँगा

[ The door slams. Derry runs panting ]

Scene :  Mr Lamb’s garden, [ The noise of a branch shifting; apples thumping down; the branch shifting again ]

श्रीमान् लैम्ब्स गार्डन, [शाखा के हिलने का शोर; सेब नीचे गिर रहा है; शाखा फिर से स्थानांतरित हो रही है]

Mr Lamb : Steady……………….That’s……………got it. That’s it………[ More apples fall ]

[ A creak. A crash. The ladder falls back, Mr Lamb with it. A thump. The branch swishes back. Then silence. Derry opens the garden gate still panting.]

स्थिर ……………….वह ……… समझ गया। बस………[ और सेब गिरते हैं ]

[एक क्रेक। एक दुर्घटना। सीढ़ी पीछे गिरती है, मिस्टर लैम्ब उसके साथ। एक प्रहार। शाखा पीछे मुड़ जाती है। फिर मौन। डैरी बगीचे का गेट खोलता है जो अभी भी हांफ रहा है।]

Derry : You see, You see ! I came back. You  said I wouldn’t but I came back [Silence] Mr Lamb, it’s all right………..you fell……I’m here, Mr Lamb. It’s all right.[Silence] I came back, Lamey-Lamb. I did………. Come back. [ Derry begins to weep ]

तुम देखो, तुम देखो! मैं वापस आया। आपने कहा था कि मैं नहीं करूंगा लेकिन मैं वापस आ गया [मौन] श्रीमान मेम्ने, यह ठीक है ………..आप गिर गए……मैं यहाँ हूँ, श्रीमान मेम्ने। सब ठीक है। [मौन] मैं वापस आ गया, लेमी-मेमने। मैंने किया………। वापस लौटें। [ डेरी रोने लगती है ]
