BRIEF  INTRODUCTIONI TO THE PLAY “ON THE FACE OF IT”

It is a short play which has only three scenes and there characters. The characters are Mr.Lamb, Derry and Derry’s mother. The first and the last scene are placed in Mr.Lamb’s garden and the second scene is placed at Derry’s house. Mr.Lamb is old man. He has lost one of his legs in war. Now he has a tin leg in its place. He lives alone in a house that has a garden also. People have spread many stories about him and no one ever comes to visit him. Kids call him Lamey-Lamb. Derry’s state is also not much different. He is fourteen-year-old boy. The one side of his face I ; all burned and he looks very ugly. People look at him  with sense of shock and fear. Everyone makes him conscious of his ugliness and it gives him much mental pain. He is sick of the world he is living in. Once he comes into Mr Lamb’s  garden thinking that no one lives there. Mr lamb sees him enter the garden and the two have a long heart-to-heart talk. Derry is so impressed by Mr Lamb’s encouraging works that he decides to leave his home and start living with Mr. lamb. He goes back home to tell his mother of what he has decided. But when he comes to  the garden, he finds Mr Lamb already dead.

“ON THE FACE OF IT” नाटक का संक्षिप्त परिचय

यह एक लघु नाटक है जिसमें केवल तीन दृश्य और तीन ही पात्र है। पात्र है ---- मिस्टर 

लेम्ब,डेरी,और डेरी की माँ! पहला तथा अंतिम दृश्य मिस्टर लेम्ब के बाग़ में रखे गए 

है! दुसरा  दृश्य डेरी के घर पे दिखाया गया है। मिस्टर लेम्ब एक बूढा आदमी है! वह 

अपनी एक टांग युद्ध में खो बैठा है! अब उसके जगह टीन की टांग बनी हुई है। वह एक 

घर में अकेला रहता है जिसमे एक बाग़ भी। लोगो ने उसके बारे में बहुत कहानिया फैला रखी 

है और उससे मिलने क लिए कभी कोई आता है। बच्चे उसे लंगड़ा लेम्ब कहकर बुलाते है!

डेरी की स्तिथि भी ज्यादा भिन्न नहीं है! वह एक चौदह वर्षीय लड़का है! उसके चेहरे एक 

एक तरफ का पूरा हिस्सा जला हुआ है और वह देखने में बहुत भद्दा लगता है! लोग उसकी 

तरफ सदमे और भय के भाव के साथ देखते है! हर कोई उसे उसकी कुरूपता का आभास 

करवाता रहता है!और इससे वह बहुत मानसिक पीड़ा महसूस करता है!वह उस संसार से 

तंग आ चूका है जिसमे वह रह रहा है!एक बार वह यह सोच कर मिस्टर लेम्ब के बाग़ में 

जाता है की वह कोई नहीं रहता है। मिस्टर लेम्ब उसे बाग़ में आते हुए देख लेते है और 

दोनों दिल खोल कर लम्बी बाते करते है!डेरी मिस्टर लेम्ब के प्रोत्साहित करने वाले शब्दों से 

इतना प्रभावित होता है की वह अपना घर छोड़ कर मिस्टर लेम्ब के साथ रहने का निश्चय कर 

लेता है!वह वापस घर अपनी माँ को यह बताने क लिए जाता है की उसने क्या निश्चय किया 

है!किन्तु जब वह बाग़ में आता है  तो देखता है!की मिस्टर लेम्ब  पहले ही वह मारा 

पड़ा है ! 

     SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF THE PLAY

Scene : Mr Lamb’s Garden. There is the Occasional sound of birdsong and of tree leaves rustling. Derry’s FootSteps are heard as he walks Slowly and tentatively through the long grass. He pauses, then walks on again. He comes round a screen of bushes. When Mr.Lamb  Speaks to him, he is close at hand and Derry is Started.

दृश्य: मिस्टर लैंब का बगीचा। वह पक्षियों के गाने और पेड़ो के पत्तो के सरसराने की कभी 

कभी आवाजे आती है ! डेरी के कदमो की आवाज आती है  जब वह धीरे धीरे और झिझकते 

हुए लम्बी घास में चल रहा होता है ! वह रुकता , और फिर दोबारा चलने लगता ! वह झाड़ियों 

की ओट में आजाता है ! जब मिस्टर लेम्ब  उससे बात करते है  तो डेरी बहुत नजदीक होता है 

और वह चौक उठता है।

Mr Lamb : Mind the apples.

मिस्टर लैंब : सेबों का ध्यान रखते हुए चलो

Derry : What ? Who’s there ?

डेरी : क्या? वहाँ कौन है ?

Mr Lamb : Lamb’s my name. Mind the Apples. Crab apples those are. Windfalla in the long grass you could trip.

मिस्टर लैंब : मेरा नाम लेम्ब है ! सेबों का ध्यान रखते हुए चलो ! वे खट्टे सेब है ! 

हवा से लम्बी घास में गिर गए है ! तुम उनपर से फिसल कर गिर सकते हो !

Derry : I Thought this was an empty place. I didn’t know there was anybody here.

डेरी : मैंने सोचा कि यह एक खाली जगह है । मुझे नहीं पता था कि यहाँ कोई भी है 

Mr Lamb : That’s all right. I’m here. What you afraid of, boy ?

मिस्टर लैंब : कोई बात नहीं । मैं यहाँ हुं। तुम क्या डरते हो, लड़के?

Derry : I thought it was an Empty house.

डेरी : मुझे लगा कि यह एक खाली घर था

Mr Lamb : So it is. Since I’m out here in the Garden. It is Empty. Until I go back inside.

मिस्टर लैंब : खली ही तो है ! क्युकी मई यहाँ बाहर बाग में हु,यह खाली है। जब 

तक मैं वापस अंदर नहीं जाता।

Derry : [Afraid] I’ve got to go.

डेरी :  [डरकर] मुझे जाना है !

Mr Lamb : Not on my account. I don’t mind who comes into the garden. The gate’s always open. Only you climbed the garden wall. All welcome. You’re welcome.

मेरी वजह से नहीं ! मुझे कोई चिंता नहीं होती की मेरे बाग़ में कौन आता है !गेट 

हमेशा खुला रहता है ! बात सिर्फ यह है की तुम बाग़ की दिवार चढ़कर  अंदर आए  

हो ! सभी का स्वागत है ! तुम्हारा भी स्वागत है

Derry : I’d not come to steal anything.

मैं कुछ भी चोरी करने नहीं आया हूँ !

Mr Lamb : No, no. The young lads steal. You’re no so young.

नहीं, नहीं ! छोटे बच्चे चोरी करते है ! तुम तोह उतने छोटे नहीं हो !

Derry : I just wanted to come into the garden.

मैं सिर्फ बगीचे में आना चाहता था

Mr Lamb : So you did.

और तुम आ गए

Derry : You don’t know who I am.

आप नहीं जानते कि मैं कौन हूं।

Mr Lamb : A boy. Thirteen or so.

एक लड़का तेरह के करीब का

Derry : Fourteen, but I’ve got to go now Goodbye.

चौदह ! किन्तु अब मुझे जाना है ! अलविदा

Mr Lamb : Nothing to be afraid of.

डरने की कोई बात नहीं है !

Derry : But I’m not afraid . People are afraid of me.

किन्तु मै  डरा नहीं हु ! बल्कि लोग मुझसे डरते है !

Mr Lamb : Why should that be.

ऐसा किस लिए ?

Derry : Everyone is. I know. I can see.

हर कोई ! मुझे पता है। दिख जाता है !

Mr Lamb : See what ?

क्या दिख जाता है ?

Derry : What they think.?

की वे क्या सोचते हैं ?

Mr Lamb : What do they think ?

वे क्या सोचते हैं ?

 Derry : They see my Face and think, “That’s a terrible thing. That’s the ugliest 

thing one ever saw.” They say, “Poor boy,” But I’m not poor.

वे मेरा चेहरा देखते हैं और सोचते हैं, "यह एक भयानक चीज है । यह अब तक की 

सबसे बदसूरत चीज है। "वे कहते हैं," बेचरा  लड़का, "लेकिन मैं बेचरा  नहीं हूं।

Mr Lamb : Later on, When it’s a bit cooler, I’ll get the ladder and stick, and pull down those crab appes. They’re ripe for it.

बाद में, जब  मौसम थोड़ा  ठंडा हो जायेगा  तो मै एक  सीढ़ी और लम्बी  छड़ी ले 

आऊंगा  और उन जंगली सेबो को निचे गिरा दूंगा ! वे अब तोड़ने योग्य पाक चुके हैं

Derry : What have you changed the subject for ? People always do that. Why don’t you ask me ? You don’t ask me because you’re afraid to.

आपने किस विषय को बदल दिया है? लोग हमेशा ऐसा ही करते हैं। आप मुझसे क्यों 

नहीं पूछते? आप मुझसे इसलिए नहीं पूछते क्योंकि आप ऐसा करने से डरते हो !

Mr Lamb : You want me to ask…….. Say so then.

तुम चाहते हो की मै तुमसे पूछू………… तब ऐसा कहो न। 

Derry : I don’t like being with people. Any People.

मैं लोगों के साथ रहना पसंद नहीं करता। कोई  भी लोग।

Mr Lamb : It looks you got burned in a fire.

ऐसा लगता है की तुम किसि आग में जल गए थे !

Derry : Not in a fire. I got acid all down that side of my face and it burned it all away. It ate my face up. It ate me up. And now it’s like this and it won’t ever be any different. Now are you Interested in me ?

आग में नहीं। मेरे  चेहरे के उस तरफ के पुरे  हिस्से से  एसिड बहता चला गया था। 

और उसने उस इस्से को पूरी तरह  जला दिया। इसने मेरा चेहरा ही खा लिया। इसने 

मुझे भी खा लिया। और अब यह मेरा चेहरा  ऐसा है और यह कभी भी मुझसे  

अलग नहीं होगा। अब आप मुझ में रुचि रखते हैं?

Mr Lamb : I’m Interested in anybody. Anything. There’s nothing God made that Doesn’t interest me. Look over there. What can you se ?

मैं किसी में भी  रुचि रखता हूं कुछ भी। किसी चीज में भी।  कोई भी ऐसा चीज 

नहीं है जो ईश्वर ने  नहीं बनाई हो और  और मुझे रूचि न रहे।  उधर देखो।  तुम्हे 

क्या दिखाई पड़ता है। 

Derry : Just weeds.

केवल घास पात !

Mr Lamb : There are flowers And trees  and herbs. Why is one green, Growing plant called a weed another ‘flower’ ? Where’s the different ? It’s all life……..Growing. Same as you and me.

वहा  फूल , वृक्ष और जड़ी बुटिया  भी  है  ! क्यों एक हरे , बढ़ते पौधों को घास 

-पात  कहा जाता है  और अन्य  को  'फूल ' ? बताओ  अंतर कहा है  ? यह सब जीवन है  विकसित होता हुआ।  उसी प्रकार , जैसे तुम और मै।

Derry : We’re not the same.

हम एक जैसे नहीं हैं !

Mr Lamb : I’m old and you’re young. You’ve got a burned face, I’ve got a tin leg. Not important. You’re standing there: I’m sitting here. Where’s the Difference ?

मैं बूढ़ा हूँ और तुम  युवा हैं तुमको  एक जला हुआ चेहरा मिला है, मुझे एक टिन 

का  पैर मिला है। महत्वपूर्ण नहीं। तुम वहां खड़े हैं: मैं यहां बैठा हूं अंतर कहां है?

Derry : Why have you got a tin leg ?

आपको टिन का पैर क्यों मिला है?

Mr Lamb : Real one got blown off, Years back. Lamey-Lamb, Some kid say. Doesn’t trouble me.

असली टांग ( तोप के गोले से ) उड़ गई  थी।  कुछ वर्ष पहले।  लांगु लेम्ब - कुछ 

बच्चे मुझे नाम से बुलाते है ! मुझे कोई परेशानी नहीं होती।

Derry : But you can put on trousers and cover it up. What can I do with my face ? It won’t ever change. I have heard that fairy story of ‘Beauty and Beast’ Beauty love the monstrous into a handsome prince. But no one’ll kiss me, ever only my mother, and she kisses me on the other side of my face. I don’t like my mother to kiss me, she does it because she has to. I don’t care if nobody ever kissed me. I won’t ever look different. When I’m as old as you, I’ll look the same. I’ll still only have half a face.

लेकिन आप   पतलून पहन  सकते हैं और अपनी टांग को  कवर कर सकते हैं। मैं अपने चेहरे 

के साथ क्या कर सकता हूं? यह कभी भी नहीं बदल पाएगा । मैंने वह 'सूंदर स्त्री  तथा जंगली 

पशु की कथा सुनी  है सूंदर स्त्री एक राक्षसनुमा  विशाल पशु से प्रेम करती थी । और जब उसे 

चूमती थी , वह एक सूंदर राजकुमार में बदल जाता था।   किन्तु मुझे कभी भी कोई नहीं चूमेगा। 

सिर्फ मेरी माँ ही चूमती है ( जो जला हुआ नहीं है ) . मै पसंद नहीं करता की माँ मुझे चूमे , वह 

सिर्फ इसलिए करती हैं क्योकि ऐसा उसे ( एक माँ होने के नाते ) करना ही है ! मुझे कोई 

परवाह नहीं है चाहे मुझे  कोई भी कंही न चूमे।  मै कभी  भी भिन्न नहीं दिखूंगा।  जब मै इतना 

बड़ा हो जाऊंगा  जितने की आप इस समय  हैं , मै ऐसा ही लगूंगा ! मेरे पास उस समय भी 

आधा चेहरा ही होगा
